What kind of calcium is best?

Not all calcium supplements are equal. Studies have been performed on the absorption of calcium. Calcium carbonate is the least expensive but the least well absorbed and higher doses are needed to be effective. Calcium citrate is more expensive but results in better absorption if stomach acid is low and thus is often the preferred choice for medical practitioners with patients over 50.

All calcium comes from the earth soil and the best source is a healthy diet incorporating plants that are strong in calcium but cows too get their calcium from the plants they eat. The dairy association has sponsored the perception that dairy products are a primary source of calcium However, well over 70% of the world’s population live in the equatorial zone where cow’s milk is not used and these people have better bones than those who live in the northern industrialized countries.

What does exercise do for bone health and what kind is best?

Astronauts in a gravity free environment begin losing calcium within about two days. Immobilizing an arm results in bone mass loss and immobilization in a bed for an extended time will result in bone loss throughout the body. Our modern day saving devices and engine powered travel have greatly reduced the exercise experienced by our forefathers. This lack of exercise diminishes the stimuli that promotes bone strength. The lack of exercise along with the nutritional deficiencies due to our modern way of life are the primary reasons for the loss of bone mineral density in this modern age. The English medical journal Lancet, compared present day skeletons with those buried two centuries ago and the ancient bone showed better bone mineral density than the modern bones.

The form of exercise to build bone requires only that it imposes some resistance. Weight lifting exercise is known to be very effective in building bone but also walking, bicycle riding, and tennis are effective as a bone building exercise.

Can I use Progesterone for birth control?

Mexican wild yam is referred to in folklore for birth control and progesterone or progestational effects are used in birth control pills to inhibit ovulation.

Technically, progesterone, if taken early in the menstrual cycle could inhibit ovulation, however, there are no known medical studies that have tested progesterone cream as a birth control mechanism and therefore it cannot be recommended for this purpose.

I have endometriosis. Can I use Progesta One?

Yes! Endometriosis is a disease of the 20th Century. The cause of endometriosis is unclear, it's diagnosis is difficult yet the effects can be very painful during menstruation. Dr. Lee writes in his book that it is tempting to speculate that our petro chemical age has spawned diseases we have never known before - and that endometriosis is one of them.

Dr. Lee goes on to say that mainstream treatment of endometriosis is difficult and not very successful. He says that as an alternative, he has treated a number of endometriosis patients, some after failed surgery, with natural progesterone and has observed considerable success. Dr. Lee says that estrogen initiates endometrial cell proliferation in the form of blood vessel accumulation in the endometrium.

The aim of natural progesterone is to block the monthly estrogen stimulus and thus, stop further proliferation of endometrial cells. Dr. Lee advises such women to use natural progesterone cream from day six of the cycle using 1 oz. of the cream per week for three weeks, stopping just before their expected period. The treatment requires patience. Dr. Lee reports that over 4 to 6 months the pains gradually subside as healing of the inflammatory sites occur. Discomfort might not disappear entirely but it becomes more tolerable and eventually endometriosis is cured by menopause.

I have uterine fibroids. Can I use Progesta One?

Yes! Fibroids are the most common growth of the female genital tract. They are round, firm and benign and commonly grow to the size of a grapefruit. They are often associated with heavy periods and irregular bleeding. After menopause they usually wither away.

Fibroids are one of the most common reasons that women have a hysterectomy. Natural progesterone offers a better alternative because fibroid tumors like breast fibrocysts are a product of estrogen dominance. Estrogen dominance stimulates their growth and Dr. Lee in his book comments that estrogen dominance is a much greater problem than is recognized by contemporary medicine.

When estrogen dominance is counterbalanced with natural progesterone they no longer grow in size and will generally decrease in size and at menopause they will atrophy.

What effect does Progesterone have on cardiovascular disease?

Natural progesterone may have a protective effect on the heart. Natural progesterone is significantly effective in raising good cholesterol (HDL). In a study called the PEPI trial, natural progesterone was more effective in raising HDL’s than the synthetic versions.

Dr. Lee advises that progesterone increases the burning of fats for energy and has an anti-inflammatory effect and both of these actions are protective against heart disease. Progesterone is a natural diuretic, it promotes better sleep patterns and helps deal with stress.

All of the actions of progesterone are beneficial to the heart and Dr. Lee throws out the gauntlet when he challenges the need for a study to compare the heart history of women using natural progesterone during their post menopausal years with women on estrogen and non-hormone users. It is Dr. Lee’s firm conviction that such a comparison will reveal better results than for women who use estrogen alone or estrogen with progestins.

Estrogen is often touted as a preventer of cardiovascular disease in women. The highly regarded Framingham study has found no coronary benefit from estrogen use. In her letter to the New England Journal of Medicine which followed the publication of the Nurses Questionnaire Study, Dr. Jerilyn Prior, listed 16 references disputing the claim that estrogen provided cardiovascular benefit.

Is there a relationship between hair loss and menopause?

The most common cause of hair loss is low thyroid function. When progesterone levels fall from lack of ovulation, the body responds with increasing production of the adrenal cordical steroid, and androstenedione which is an alternative precursor to progesterone for production of other adrenal cordical hormones. Androstenedione conveys some male properties which leads to hair loss in women.

When progesterone levels are raised the androstenine level gradually fall and normal hair growth will eventually resume. Since hair growth is a slow process, it may take four to six months for the effects of natural progesterone supplement to take effect.

Is there a relationship between weight gain and menopause?

There is a strong connection between fat and estrogen. Other than the ovaries, fat is the most significant source in the manufacture of estrogen in the body. Women can get caught up in a cycle where increased body fat raises estrogen levels and estrogen increases a tendency to accumulate body fat.

Women have been found to gain an average of 10 to 15 pounds at menopause and estrogen promotes water retention. Low thyroid function can also slow down metabolism and lead to weight gain.

Natural progesterone may help normalize weight by resolving estrogen dominance. Progesterone will make thyroid hormone receptors more sensitive, thus, aiding thyroid activity in the body.

How should I use Progesta One if I am trying to get pregnant?

Use the same recommendations as for women who are menstruating. Cream should be applied after ovulation. Theoretically, progesterone cream if applied before ovulation will suppress ovulation.

Dr. Lee reports that the chief cause of early pregnancy loss is the failure of the body to increase progesterone production sufficiently during the first several weeks after fertilization. Women who are having difficulty conceiving or who may be at risk of a miscarriage, may wish to discuss with their physician natural progesterone supplementation.

What is the difference between synthetic and natural Progesterone?

Natural progesterone is the identical molecule to that which the human body makes. Synthetic versions of progesterone have a very similar molecule and will occupy the same receptor sites in the human body as does natural progesterone. The molecule of synthetic progesterone (Provera, etc.), is slightly different to natural progesterone and therefore is not natural to the body and this leads to a long list of negative side effects. Negative side effects are a typical result when a synthetic and unnatural substance (drugs) are introduced to the body.
