An Overview of Natural Progesterone A womans ovaries make two hormones, estrogen and progesterone. When these hormones are out of balance, hormone related illnesses will emerge. 1964 is the year in which estrogen replacement therapy entered the public consciousness. The January 13, 1964 issue of Newsweek carried a story entitled "No More Menopause" reporting on the work of a Dr. Wilson who was reported to have been studying Menopause since the 1920s. He had reached the conclusion that the change of life stemmed from the lack of Estrogen and Progesterone. This article was followed with articles and books including a book by Dr. Wilson himself entitled Feminine Forever. Ayerst , the first maker of a synthetic estrogen called Premarin (pregnant mares urine) picked up on the opportunity to popularize Premarin and the pharmaceutical industry working with Dr. Wilson, financed a major promotional campaign on the good news about estrogen. Dr. Wilson used adjectives bordering on the lurid to describe menopause as a time when woman became dried up, cranky, sexless old hags. His "magic pill" was going to save them from that tragedy keeping them "feminine forever." From this time onwards, almost everyone researching or writing about menopause unquestioningly accepted Dr. Wilsons information as fact when in fact, most of it was terribly wrong. Dr. John Lee (a world authority on natural progesterone) and many other medical practitioners and researchers now believe that the present synthetic versions of hormones are making millions of women sick and putting them at risk for cancer, strokes, and heart disease. Menopause is blamed for a variety of problems including: uncontrollable hot flashes There is a great thirst for knowledge in this field. Women know full well that they are not being served properly when their doctors prescribe synthetic hormones such as Provera and Premarin. They know that a hormone that is supposed to cure them should not also promote cancer. They know something is wrong when 650,000 or more hysterectomies are performed in the United States each year. They know that menopause is not a mistake of Mother Nature and women are becoming far more knowledgeable, intelligent, and intuitive than their Doctors give them credit for. Word of natural Progesterone has spread and a revolution in health care is on the way. Medical research by Dr. Lee and others has demonstrated that Progesterone resolves the problems of Menopause on a virtually one for one basis. What will my Doctor say about Natural Progesterone? In the past, Natural Progesterone supplementation was not taught in medical school and most conventionally trained doctors have little understanding about Progesterone. Dr. Lee reports that when lecturing to Doctors about his research on Natural Progesterone, while doctors are unable to dispute the results of his work, they were generally perplexed that this knowledge is missing from their own education and textbooks (and pharmaceutical advertising) on which they rely. Dr. Lee says that while the reception of medical doctors is warm, he describes their look of perplexity as "cognitive dissonance". In their minds, Dr. Lee reports, their file marked Progesterone are filled with advertising about synthetic progestins (Provera etc.), which are not the same thing. A revolution is now taking place in the Medical world as more and more doctors realize that to stay in business they must get involved in alternative medicine. Synthetic drugs aim to resolve the symptoms of maladies and sickness but rarely go to the cause of the problem. The fundamental objective of alternative medicine is to find the actual cause and fix it. In March of 1997, Harvard trained Dr. Andrew Weil was nominated by Time magazine in the USA as one of the 25 most influential people in America for his work in bringing respectability to alternative medicine. It is reported that more than 50% of Americans are now seeking alternative remedies to sickness and as people turn to alternative remedies in droves, medical doctors are being forced to adopt alternative medicine techniques in their practices. Dr. Weil, a professor at the Tucson University Medical School, has introduced alternative medicine to the curriculum of medical doctors in training at the University of Arizona Medical School in Tucson and other medical schools are following suite. Doctors favorably disposed towards Natural Progesterone are growing at a rapid rate despite resistance from conventional medicine. Traditionally conventional medicine aligns itself to drug companies and drug company advertising in medical journals typically represents a significant source of a conventional doctors continuing education. How can I best test the level of my progesterone and other hormones? The newest and most accurate method of testing for Progesterone, Estradiol (estrogen), Testosterone, DHEA and Melatonin is through the saliva. Saliva test kits are available. The kit includes a collection receptacle for the saliva together with detailed instructions. What is Progesterone and what is its relationship to Estrogen? Progesterone is one of two main hormones, the other being estrogen, made by the ovaries of menstruating women. Progesterone is also made in smaller amounts by the adrenal glands in both sexes and by the testes in males. When a womans monthly cycle is functioning correctly, estrogen is the dominant hormone during the first two weeks of the menstrual cycle. In response to ovulation, progesterone assumes dominance for the final two weeks of the month. When the pituitary gland in the brain sends a message to the ovaries to stop production of progesterone, the menstrual cycle begins within 48 hours of this message. If a pregnancy occurs, progesterone production continues and increases to very high levels (up to 400mg. per day) as the fetus develops. Progesterone is the precursor to estrogen, testosterone and of all the important steroid hormones. Progesterone is made from the sterol pregnenolone which is in turn made from cholesterol which is made from acetate, a product of the breakdown of sugar and fat in the body. From Progesterone are derived not only the sex hormones including estrogens but also the corticosteroids which are essential for stress response, sugar and electrolyte balance and blood pressure. Progesterone is essential for survival and its deficiency can cause a wide range of problems. Research by Dr. Lee has led him to describe the phenomena of excess estrogen as "estrogen dominance", a condition which is toxic to the body, is fundamental to the problems of menopause and leads to cancer and other very serious problems. In 1975, at a conference arranged by the Mayo Clinic, it was announced that estrogen replacement therapy by itself increased the risk of cancer by at least six to eight times. The Mayo Clinic formally announced that estrogen by itself (ERT) is toxic and is the only known cause of endometrial cancer. At this time the Mayo clinic announced that progesterone should be taken to counteract the basic effects of estrogen and thus was born Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). From this date on it was intended that this approach to balancing the hormones be adopted by doctors to replace ERT. While natural progesterone was available, drug companies seeking market protection through exclusive products and patents (drugs and not natural remedies) promoted progestins such as Provera, etc. instead of natural progesterone which cannot be patented. Synthetic progesterone can be patented whereas natural progesterone is not patentable. What are the functions of Progesterone? In short, the three major functions of Progesterone are: 1. Provides a wide range of intrinsic biologic effects Progesterone is a central factor in the biosynthesis of other hormones but its many functions in the body are far more extensive. (See the functions of Progesterone). Why is Progesterone Cream superior to capsules or suppositories? Through the skin is the most efficient method of introducing Natural Progesterone to the body. How much Progesterone is in Progesta One? Dr. John Lee recommends Progesterone creams that contain between 400 - 500 mg per oz. Progesta One contains 480 mg. of USP grade progesterone per oz. of cream. Each 4 oz. container of Progesta One contains 1,920 mg of natural progesterone. Where should I apply Progesta One? While Progesta One can be applied to any part of the body, Dr. Lee suggests that for best results it should be applied anywhere on your body where you blush. It is very often recommended that it be applied to a different part of the body with each application and to parts where there is a minimum of fat such as behind the knees and on the chest.
